For this edition of Miami Vibes Magazine, we’re thrilled to spotlight Jonathan and Missy Babicka, the dynamic duo behind their impressive contributions to the Little Lighthouse Foundation (LLF). With a shared passion for community service, they have not only built successful careers but also dedicated themselves to making a profound difference in the lives of underserved children in Miami.
Jonathan and Missy both moved to South Beach in their twenties, a move that marked the beginning of their journey as partners in business and philanthropy.
Together, they launched Primp Salon and Hair Extension Boutique, combining their professional expertise with a commitment to charitable causes. Their involvement with LLF started early on, with Jonathan becoming one of the first donors and volunteers, eventually rising to the role of CEO. Missy, meanwhile, led various charitable events through her salon work, touching the lives of many through her passion for giving back. In this interview, Jonathan and Missy open up about their backgrounds, their inspiring journey with LLF, and how they continue to shape its mission of uplifting children and families in need. Let’s dive in!
Can you tell us a bit about yourselves and your backgrounds? How did you each come to be involved with the Little Lighthouse Foundation? Jonathan: Missy and I both moved to South Beach in our twenties, and that's when our journey together began! With her background as a professional hairstylist, having worked in Pittsburgh for several years, we decided to combine our skills and open Primp Salon and Hair Extension Boutique. We launched the salon with a series of three grand opening parties, each benefiting a different nonprofit organization. It was during this time that I discovered my passion for creating events that not only brought people together but also directed their energy and resources towards charitable causes.
Around the same time, the Little Lighthouse Foundation (LLF) was beginning to establish itself in the community. I was immediately drawn to their mission and became one of their first donors and volunteers. My dedication to the cause earned me the Shining Light Award at the Hearts and Stars Gala, which solidified my connection to the organization.
As I continued my philanthropic endeavors, the founders of LLF—Rob Sena, Aaron Resnick, and Charlie Venturi—were seeking an Executive Director to help lead their growing foundation. Although I was content with my current work, Missy encouraged me to take a leap of faith. Her belief in the opportunity, combined with my passion for the foundation's mission, led me to join LLF as Executive Director, eventually becoming the CEO. That decision marked the beginning of an incredible journey that has allowed me to make a meaningful impact on the Miami community and beyond.
Missy: As the head stylist at Primp Salon, I led several charitable events, including styling children from the Make-A-Wish Foundation, heart disease survivors from the American Heart Association, and underserved children from the Little Lighthouse Foundation. Through these experiences, I discovered my passion for giving back and became involved with the Little Lighthouse Foundation.
What inspired you to start or join the Little Lighthouse Foundation? Was there a particular moment or event that catalyzed your involvement? Jonathan: Absolutely! The first-ever Hearts and Stars Gala in 2010 was a pivotal moment for me. Although I wasn't directly involved in organizing that inaugural event, I immediately recognized that there was something magical about it. That experience piqued my interest and led me to get more involved with LLF.
As a result, I began volunteering with LLF during the early stages of one of our programs, Craft Night. I also got involved with our Beauty All Around Program, where our hairstylists from Primp Salon volunteered to do makeovers for the ladies of the Lotus House. Seeing our volunteers in their blue LLF shirts, I witnessed firsthand the profound impact we were having on the children. It wasn’t just my own experience that stood out, but also seeing the meaningful connections and positive experiences that the other volunteers were having.
Missy: The event that truly catalyzed my involvement was the birth of my firstborn child, Layla. I wanted to get her involved in giving back and being of service from a young age. Although she was too young to actively volunteer, bringing her to volunteer allowed me to set the tone and was a significant step in the right direction. As I continued to volunteer with Layla, and later with my son Prentice, I was frequently approached by other women, especially moms, who also wanted their children to give back. This inspired me to create the Ladies of the Little Lighthouse Foundation, a purpose-driven group that I founded to galvanize women to volunteer on a monthly basis. We also organize curated fundraising events each month, with 100% of the proceeds benefiting the Little Lighthouse Foundation. These events range from fitness, health and wellness activities to shopping events and cocktail parties.
For those who may not be familiar, could you explain the mission of the Little Lighthouse Foundation and the main objectives you aim to achieve? The mission of the Little Lighthouse Foundation is twofold. As a volunteer organization, we build connections through volunteerism, providing our volunteers with the opportunity to give back while making a meaningful impact on the lives of underserved children.
We produce large-scale specialty programs that impact the lives of thousands of underserved children and their families through the support of hundreds of volunteers. These programs create experiences that last a lifetime. While our recurring programs take place at our partner facilities, our specialty programs are hosted at different venues, which are an experience in themselves. Our main objectives are to level the playing field for these children by providing uplifting experiences, teaching them new skills, and, most importantly, fostering meaningful relationships between the children and the volunteers who serve as their mentors, role models, and friends.
What are some of the most significant achievements or milestones the foundation has reached since its inception? The Little Lighthouse Foundation has received several prestigious honors, including the key to the city of Miami Beach, the Jan Pfeiffer Distinguished Service Award from the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce, and several proclamations including a proclamation from the School Board of Miami Dade County Public Schools.
Our milestones are celebrated every year on our birthday in January, as we were established in 2010. Each year, we continue to impact thousands more underserved children, thanks to the ongoing support and recruitment of thousands of additional volunteers annually.
How does the foundation measure the impact of its programs and initiatives on the community? In 2023, LLF impacted the lives of over 15,000underserved children in South Florida through 19 programs with the help of over 1,5000 registered volunteers and over 200 corporate partners providing over 5,500 volunteer hours.
LLF measures the impact of its programs and initiatives through a combination of quantitative and qualitative assessments. Our approach focuses on several key metrics to ensure that we are making a meaningful difference in the lives of underserved children and their families.
Firstly, we track the number of children and families served through our programs. This includes counting attendance at our large-scale specialty programs, such as the Back to School Program, Children's Halloween Party, and Holiday Toy & Meal Distribution, where thousands of children and their families benefit from the support of hundreds of volunteers.
In addition to participation numbers, we also evaluate the level of volunteer engagement. This involves monitoring how many volunteers we attract to our recurring programs, which take place weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly, as well as our signature programs that expand the impact of these recurring activities. Understanding volunteer retention and satisfaction is crucial, as the commitment and enthusiasm of our volunteers directly influence the success of our programs.
We also measure the quality and effectiveness of our programs by gathering feedback from the children, families, and partner facilities we work with. This feedback helps us understand the specific needs and preferences of the children, ensuring that our programs remain relevant, impactful, and beneficial.
Finally, we assess the overall impact on the community by analyzing the long-term outcomes of our programs. This includes tracking the development of positive relationships between the children and volunteers, as well as observing any improvements in the children's emotional, social, and academic well-being as a result of their participation in our programs.
By combining these methods, LLF ensures that our programs not only reach a wide audience but also deliver high-quality experiences that create lasting positive change in the community.
Can you highlight some of the key programs and activities that the Little Lighthouse Foundation offers? Which ones are you particularly proud of? The Little Lighthouse Foundation really is a one-stop shop for all of your volunteering needs. We offer a menu of activities that volunteers can choose from to participate in with children in need.
One of our largest and most impactful specialty programs is the Holiday Toy & Meal Distribution. It’s a miraculous experience where we provide toys and meal kits to children, creating an uplifting and contagious energy that gives these kids the holiday experience they deserve. Another program I’m incredibly proud of is Back to School, which just took place at the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM). It’s one of my favorite places in Miami, and it’s truly special for the kids to experience the museum through guided tours from our volunteers, create empowering crafts, and receive brand-new backpacks filled with school supplies—all in such a beautiful setting overlooking Biscayne Bay. It means the world to the kids and everyone involved.
We have other specialty programs with a similar approach, like the Children’s Halloween Party, our Birthday of Service, and the Thanksgiving Turkey Giveaway. These programs serve thousands of underserved children and create a lasting impact on everyone involved.
Our recurring programs, such as Fit Club, Mindful Hour, Craft Night, and Move and Groove, are so much fun and open to everyone, providing consistent volunteer opportunities each month. We love Story Hour at Chapman Partnership because we love bringing our kids there, and it’s always a fun experience all around to see families volunteering with the children. We also enjoy building ongoing relationships with the children. Families, companies, and students can all volunteer with these children, making it a truly communal experience.
Are there any upcoming events or initiatives that you're excited about or would like to share with our readers? We are incredibly excited about the launch of the Hearts and Stars Podcast. This initiative is going to be transformational for LLF and the community. After the success of our Instagram Live series during the pandemic—where we had incredible guests join me to deliver our programs virtually—we realized the power of connecting with people in this way. Although we paused the series to focus on in-person programming, the demand for this type of content never went away.
Now, we’re evolving that Instagram Live series into a full-fledged podcast. The Babickas (Jonathan and Missy) will be hosting the Hearts & Stars podcast. We have an incredible lineup of guests, including leaders, activists, entrepreneurs, celebrities, and influencers, who will share their insights and experiences. This podcast is not just about providing inspiration; it’s about giving the children we serve—and anyone looking for guidance— access to the tools and knowledge they need to succeed in their own lives. By hearing directly from these successful individuals, listeners will gain valuable perspectives on how to navigate their careers and make an impact in their communities.
Hearts & Stars podcast is more than just another media project; it's an extension of our mission to educate, inspire, and empower the children we serve. By bringing influential voices to the forefront, we're offering a platform for meaningful conversations that can motivate our listeners to pursue their dreams, learn new skills, and make positive changes in their lives. It’s also a unique way to engage with our community and bring the work of the Little Lighthouse Foundation to a broader audience.
We have several exciting upcoming events that we're thrilled to share. We host monthly, exclusive Ladies of Little Lighthouse events and volunteer opportunities.
In October 2024, we’ll have our Halloween Fundraiser and Children's Halloween Party. December 2024 will bring our Holiday Fundraiser and the Holiday Toy & Meal Distribution, both of which are pivotal in bringing joy and essential resources to underserved children and their families.
Looking ahead, we are particularly excited to celebrate our 15-year anniversary in January 2025, a significant milestone for the Little Lighthouse Foundation.
How can individuals in the Miami community get involved with the Little Lighthouse Foundation? What opportunities are available for volunteers? There are numerous ways for individuals in the Miami community to get involved with the Little Lighthouse Foundation. We offer a wide range of volunteer opportunities, from participating in our recurring programs—like reading to children, helping with arts and crafts, or engaging in fitness activities—to assisting with our large-scale programs such as the Back-to-School program or the Children's Halloween Party.

In what ways can local businesses and organizations support the Foundation's efforts? Are there any specific partnerships you're currently looking to establish? We firmly believe in long-term strategic partnerships, and corporate volunteering is one of our strengths. We encourage local businesses and companies to partner with the Little Lighthouse Foundation by participating in our programs. We tailor corporate volunteer opportunities within our recurring programs, allowing employees to engage with the children regularly, fostering team-building while giving back to the community.
In addition to volunteer programs, companies can partner with us by sponsoring our large-scale programs, such as the Back to School Program, or our marquee event, the Hearts & Stars Gala. These opportunities provide significant exposure and brand recognition, offering companies a chance to align with a cause that deeply resonates with the Miami community.
We produce the top fundraising events in South Florida, and they are among the most sought-after because we have the best supporters. Our well-rounded partnerships with corporate partners create incredible exposure for brands while enabling businesses to give back to the community and enhance their visibility and engagement.
What has been the most rewarding part of your journey with the Little Lighthouse Foundation so far? Jonathan: The most rewarding part of my journey with the Little Lighthouse Foundation has been the relationships we've built with the children. As a dad, the love I give and receive from my own children is the most incredible thing in the world. Extending that love to children who need it most, and seeing them give it back, is truly special. Knowing that we're positively impacting thousands of kids each year and witnessing their smiling faces is beyond rewarding.
Equally fulfilling is having my own children volunteer at our programs, forming their own connections with the kids we serve. Watching them experience the same joy and emotional connection is a top highlight for me. The ripple effect of this—where volunteers, and even their own children, engage in these meaningful relationships—creates a powerful sense of community and shared purpose.
Missy: Creating the Ladies of the Little Lighthouse Foundation has been an incredible opportunity for me. This group is made up of women who have a strong desire to give back and teach their children the importance of service. Through this experience, I’ve found my calling and the ability to utilize my full potential, as I believe I have a lot of love to give. I love meeting new friends and reconnecting with old ones, and every time I’m out, I make it a point to share the mission of the Ladies of the Little Lighthouse Foundation. The response has been overwhelmingly positive, with many women excited to join a group that fosters meaningful connections and a commitment to giving back.
Can you share a memorable story or experience that has had a significant impact on you while working with the Foundation? Jonathan: One of the most memorable experiences during my time with the Little Lighthouse Foundation has been our involvement with Miami Swim Week's opening show for three consecutive years. This past year was particularly special. We partnered with the Chapman Partnership for the Homeless to bring 10 children together with 10 influencers. Each child and influencer pair collaborated to design the children’s outfits, with guidance from designer Ema Savahl. The highlight was watching these children walk the runway at one of Miami’s biggest events.
The experience was nothing short of magical and had a profound impact on everyone involved. For the kids, it was a life-changing moment that boosted their confidence and gave them a taste of the spotlight. For the influencers, it was a unique opportunity to connect with the children in a meaningful way. And for all of us, it was a powerful reminder of the difference we can make when we come together as a community.
Missy: Every time my children volunteer with the Little Lighthouse Foundation, it’s such a heartwarming and memorable experience for me. When I see Layla reading books to the younger kids and giving them hugs, or when I watch Prentice running around with the other little ones, it really solidifies the impact that we are making all around.
Miami Swim Week’s opening show is truly magical. I’ve had the opportunity for two years to walk hand-in-hand with some incredible girls from the Chapman Partnership. During the most recent Miami Swim Week opening show held this past May, I walked with a girl from Chapman Partnership on one side and my daughter Layla on the other. The entire process, from start to finish—being involved in designing their dresses and then walking them on the runway—meant the world to me, Layla, and our little friend from Chapman Partnership.
One of the most memorable milestones was also growing the Ladies of the Little Lighthouse Foundation to 350 women within just a year and celebrating our one-year anniversary.
What are your long-term goals for the Little Lighthouse Foundation? How do you envision its growth and evolution in the coming years? Jonathan: The long-term goals for the Little Lighthouse Foundation (LLF) focus on expanding its impact and reach within South Florida’s underserved communities. As LLF continues to grow, the emphasis remains on deepening the connections between volunteers and the children and families they serve, while also broadening the variety of programs offered.
A key objective is to partner with more facilities across Miami-Dade and Broward counties, ensuring that even more children benefit from LLF’s programs. By increasing the number of partner facilities, LLF can extend its reach, providing essential support and creating uplifting experiences for a larger number of underserved children.
Another critical goal is to continue enhancing and innovating LLF’s signature programs, such as the Back to School Program, Holiday Toy & Meal Distribution, and the Hearts & Stars Gala. By continuously improving these programs and introducing new initiatives like the Hearts & Stars Podcast, LLF aims to stay at the forefront of nonprofit work in the region, offering both the children served and the volunteers involved more meaningful and impactful experiences.
In the coming years, LLF envisions solidifying its reputation as a one-stop shop for all volunteering needs in South Florida, known for producing top-quality programs and events that not only benefit the community but also inspire others to give back. LLF’s growth will be marked by an ever-increasing number of volunteers, corporate partners, and community supporters, all working together to create positive, lasting change.
Ultimately, LLF’s long-term vision is to continue being a beacon of hope and support for underserved children, providing them with the resources, experiences, and relationships that will help them thrive, while also fostering a strong sense of community and volunteerism throughout South Florida.
Are there any new projects or areas of focus that you’re planning to explore in the near future?
Jonathan: We’re thrilled about several new projects that will deepen our connection with the community. The Hearts and Stars Podcast is a major initiative that will leverage our esteemed relationships to provide underserved children with access to a wealth of knowledge from our top-tier guests. This podcast will serve as a bridge, connecting our community with inspirational stories and valuable insights.
Additionally, the Ladies of Little Lighthouse has become a truly remarkable endeavor in the Miami community. This passionate and vibrant group of women and moms, along with their children, consistently comes together to volunteer and participate in curated events that always sell out. We are dedicated to creating more opportunities for women who are passionate about giving back and for moms who want to instill the value of service in their children.
Another exciting project is the launch of the LLF Kindest Club in partnership with The Kindest Kid. We’ve developed a comprehensive curriculum that will launch this year, focusing on teaching students empathy, compassion, and the importance of being of service to others. This program also emphasizes the importance of self-love, ensuring that children understand they must first care for themselves before they can effectively give their love and support to others. Through this initiative, we aim to foster a deeper sense of community and engagement, ultimately creating passionate volunteers who are committed to making a difference.
What message would you like to share with the Miami community about the importance of supporting charitable organizations like the Little Lighthouse Foundation? Jonathan: If you are looking to give back, look no further – register to volunteer at TheLittleLighthouse.org today
Missy: I encourage any women or moms in the Miami area who would like to get involved with the Little Lighthouse Foundation to create more awareness for the underserved community and involve their children. This is something very special that the ladies who are invested in giving back in the community are a part of, and we want to grow together in meaningful ways to create a bigger impact and make a difference. That’s what we stand for, and the more that we work hand-in-hand, the more lives we can change.
Is there anything else you would like to add or any final thoughts you’d like to share with our readers? As a couple, we deeply love and respect each other, and over the past 18 years, our partnership has continued to grow in ways that we never imagined. Family is at the core of everything we do—our family comes first, and we want the best not only for our kids but for everybody’s kids and future generations. We love Miami, and it’s the community that we’re committed to uplifting.
We feel that we are now in a unique and powerful space, creatively and personally, where we can put together meaningful solutions and opportunities for people to give back. At the heart of everything we do is the desire to be of service to others, because that’s what truly matters—giving back.
We’ve always considered the Little Lighthouse Foundation a creative playground, and right now, we’re in a very creative space, at the top of our game. We’re energized and excited about the initiatives we’re developing, and we’re passionate about connecting people, providing them with access to be informed, educated, and inspired. We believe that now is our time to make a real difference, but we can’t do it alone. The support and involvement of the Miami community are crucial. Together, with the strength of our partnership and the collective energy of our community, we can create lasting, positive change. We’re committed to being a part of the solution, and we’re ready to make an impact.
