residents identifying as Hispanic or Latino, the significance of Hispanic Heritage Month is unmatched. Celebrated from September 15 to October 15 every year, it’s a time to pay tribute to the diverse and profound contributions of Hispanic and Latinx communities

throughout the United States—and in our own backyard.

We recently caught up with Chris Valdes, local chef and premier example of how Hispanic heritage can shape a culinary journey, on a visit to some of Miami’s most iconic Latin hotspots. As the son of hardworking Cuban immigrants, Valdes knows the importance of staying connected to his roots, empowering other Hispanics, and selflessly helping to create a promising future for all. Through his undeniable passion and dedication to his local community, Chef Chris Valdes uses the power of food to unite and celebrate his culture. And he serves as a reminder of the importance of embracing and upholding our heritage—whether it be through timeless recipes or local landmarks that have carved a special place in the hearts of the Hispanic community.

Chef Chris Valdes, tell us a little about who you are and what you do: I am a Miami born-and-raised chef, actor, philanthropist, celebrity caterer, and cookbook author of One with The Kitchen. My unique approach to cooking involves embracing various cultures and fusing Caribbean flavors with modern influences to create iconic dishes.

I’ve done appearances on LIVE with Kelly and Ryan, The Sherri Show, Good Morning America, and been a finalist on Food Network Star and Star Salvation. But beyond my culinary achievements, I have a deep commitment to my local community and have collaborated with organizations such as Florida Dairy Farmers, No Kid Hungry, and March of Dimes. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I was able to donate over 50K meals to the community, supporting first responders, seniors, and families in need.

We’re honored to have you featured on our cover again. What have you been up to since we last spoke to you for the June 2022 issue of Miami Vibes Magazine? Do you have any upcoming projects you’d like to share with us? Since my last Miami Vibes magazine cover, I had the incredible opportunity to co-host Roku's first Spanish cooking show, Que Delicioso, and even went viral due to a hilarious mess-up from my end on Telemundo's Hoy Día, a live international show. This summer, I focused on personal growth and self-improvement, which has been a fulfilling journey for me. I'm looking forward to continuing to learn, evolve, and explore new opportunities in the future. But I do have plans to be back on-screen this fall and will also be participating and taking my sazon Latino to the 2023 Food Network New York Wine and Food Festival.

How has your culture influenced your culinary journey? The essence of my Hispanic culture has left a mark on my culinary journey, infusing it with vibrant flavors and cherished traditions. Growing up in a household and family business where food was not merely sustenance but a celebration of heritage, I learned the art of cooking from mom’s recipes and techniques. The warmth of spices like cumin, oregano, and cilantro filled the kitchen, while the rhythmic beats of salsa and merengue set the tone for family gatherings all centered around the one thing that brings everyone together in this world—food.

From mastering the art of making empanadas to perfecting the balance of flavors in arroz con pollo, my Hispanic roots have instilled in me a profound respect for the importance of family, community, and the joy of sharing meals together. Embracing my cultural heritage has not only shaped my culinary skills but also given me a deeper appreciation for the diversity and unity that food can bring to people from all walks of life.

Why do you think it’s important to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month? As a Latino, I believe it is now more crucial than ever to uphold a spirit of unity, celebrating our talents, supporting one another, and honoring our roots. As the election year approaches, we witness how topics like Hispanics, immigration, and the Latino vote come into focus, influencing the trajectory of our collective future. Being the son of hardworking immigrants who sacrificed to provide a better life, I take immense pride in applauding the future generations that are following the same path. However, with the passage of time, I also notice how the continuity of this ideal is facing challenges and uncertainties. As Latinos, it is imperative that we stay connected to our heritage, maintain our sense of community, and empower each other to ensure a brighter and more promising future for all.

What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you? For me Hispanic Heritage is a time to celebrate our rich history as Hispanics, reflecting on how far we've journeyed, and proudly sharing what makes us uniquely special within the world. Our food, music, culture, traditions, and essence are cemented into this celebration, embracing the essence of our roots and the significance of our origins. It serves as a unifying force, bringing us together as one big family, bonded by a shared heritage and common values.


Do you see the influence of your culture in Miami? If so, how/where? You can witness the influence of Hispanic culture in various aspects of daily life in every corner of Miami. One of the most apparent ways is through the city's culinary scene, with countless restaurants offering authentic Latin American and Caribbean dishes, such as Cuban, Colombian, Venezuelan, and Puerto Rican cuisine. The aroma of cafecito (Cuban coffee) fills the air, and popular dishes like empanadas, pastelitos, and arroz con frijoles are easy to find.

Beyond food, the Hispanic influence can be seen in Miami's vibrant cultural events, such as Calle Ocho Festival and Carnaval Miami (both of which I have been a part of), celebrating the music, dance, and traditions of different Latin American countries. The city's art scene also reflects these cultural influences, with street art and numerous galleries displaying works inspired by Latin American heritage.

What do cultural landmarks, like Tower Theater Miami, mean to the Hispanic community? Overall, Miami's Hispanic culture plays a significant role in shaping the city's identity, adding a colorful and dynamic dimension to its diverse and multicultural landscape. The Tower Theater holds a significant place in my heart as a Miami landmark that carries a special meaning to me. It was the perfect location to celebrate the book launch of my first cookbook, One with the Kitchen. Miami is an integral part of my journey and roots, and I wanted to honor this connection by hosting the event at such a remarkable landmark. The historical significance and charm of the Tower Theater added a unique touch to the celebration, making it a memorable experience that beautifully intertwined my culinary journey with the vibrant spirit of Miami.

Are there any special ways that you celebrate or raise awareness for Hispanic Heritage Month?

As a proud Latino, I celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by sharing and celebrating my culture. From posting scrumptious videos of Latin fusion on my social media channels, to hosting live cooking demos, and giving back by sharing food with others. It's a wonderful way to showcase my roots and connect with others who appreciate our rich heritage.
