In Miami, life on the water isn’t just a lifestyle, it’s a global business. From Biscayne Bay to the glittering marinas of Miami Beach, the city has quickly become one of the most influential hubs in the world for luxury yachting.
Few people understand that transformation better than Şekip Hardal, Founder of the Global Superyacht Forum, a platform that brings together the world’s most influential shipbuilders, designers, investors, and
innovators to shape the future of the superyacht industry.
And according to Hardal, the forum was born out of a simple but powerful realization.
“I was inspired by the need to bridge the gap between the world's most exclusive maritime craftsmanship and
the evolving expectations of global luxury travelers,” he says.
As the expectations of ultra-high-net-worth travelers evolve, so too must the industry that serves them.

A Defining Moment for the Global Superyacht Forum

Before launching the Global Superyacht Forum, Hardal noticed something surprising about the industry. “The realization came when I saw industry leaders operating in silos,” Hardal explains.
“I knew we needed a unified global forum for cross-border dialogue.”
That realization ultimately sparked the creation of what has become one of the most important think tanks in luxury maritime culture. Hardal’s perspective was shaped by years of organizing high-level international gatherings.
“My background in organizing high-level summits in Türkiye shaped my view that luxury is defined by community and shared standards as much as the vessels themselves.”
Rather than creating another trade show, Hardal envisioned something far more ambitious. “The vision was to create a ‘Davos of the Sea’—a meeting point where the future of the industry is debated and decided.”
How the Global Superyacht Forum Evolved
into a Global Bridge
What began as a regional summit has since grown into a powerful international platform connecting maritime leaders across continents. “We have evolved from a regional summit into a global bridge, now connecting European heritage with the emerging UHNW markets in the US and beyond,” Hardal says.
Today, the forum gathers the people who are actively shaping the next generation of yachts, from shipbuilders and designers to engineers and investors. And unlike traditional yacht industry events, the conversations go far deeper than sales.
“Unlike trade shows, GSYF is focused on intellectual capital and high-level networking rather than just sales,” Hardal explains.
In many cases, the ideas exchanged at the forum become the foundation for industry-wide innovation.
“Conversations here often lead to new partnerships in sustainable design and standardized service excellence.”
Miami and the Rise of the Superyacht
Capital of the West
As the superyacht industry expands globally, Miami has become one of its most important gateways.
“Miami is the new ‘Superyacht Capital of the West,’ acting as the gateway for the next generation of American owners,” Hardal says.
The city’s appeal lies in its rare combination of lifestyle, infrastructure, and global connectivity.
“Miami attracts investors because it seamlessly blends lifestyle, real estate, and a world-class maritime infrastructure.”
With luxury waterfront developments, major yacht shows, and proximity to the Caribbean, Miami continues to draw a new generation of yacht owners.
The Future of Luxury Yachting
According to Hardal, the next decade of yachting will be shaped by several major trends.
“The next decade will be defined by ‘Quiet Luxury,’ technological transparency, and hyper-personalization.” Quiet luxury reflects a shift toward refined craftsmanship and discreet elegance rather than overt displays of wealth. Technology is also becoming increasingly seamless.

“I am most excited by AI-integrated navigation and ‘invisible’ service technology that enhances the guest experience without intrusion,” Hardal says.
At the same time, sustainability is transforming how yachts are designed and built.
“The sector is shifting from ‘compliance’ to ‘innovation,’ investing in hydrogen propulsion and eco-conscious materials.”
Redefining Luxury at Sea
The definition of luxury itself is evolving in the superyacht world. “Owners now prioritize ‘experiential access’, using yachts as platforms for exploration and scientific discovery rather than just status,” Hardal explains.

Rather than simply cruising between glamorous ports, many owners are using their vessels to explore remote destinations and support environmental research.
It’s a shift that reflects the broader evolution of luxury travel.
Collaboration at the Heart of the Industry
The Global Superyacht Forum thrives on collaboration between disciplines that rarely interact elsewhere.
“We facilitate ‘blind-date’ networking and curated panels that force shipbuilders and designers to solve problems together,” Hardal says.
Those conversations often spark partnerships that lead to the next generation of vessels.
For Hardal, witnessing those collaborations evolve into real-world projects is one of the most rewarding aspects of the forum.
“Seeing a partnership formed at GSYF result in a groundbreaking vessel hitting the water years later” is a moment he never takes for granted.
Lessons from Building a Global Platform
For entrepreneurs hoping to influence international industries, Hardal offers straightforward advice. “Focus on building trust before building a platform; in global industries, your reputation is your only currency.”
It’s a philosophy that has helped transform the Global Superyacht Forum into one of the most respected gatherings in luxury maritime culture.
What Luxury at Sea Means Today
Despite the cutting-edge technology found on today’s superyachts, Hardal still appreciates the simplicity of traditional sailing.
“I find peace in simple sailing, stripping away the technology to reconnect with the rhythm of the wind and water.”
When asked to define luxury at sea today, his answer is simple yet powerful.

“It means the ultimate freedom: the ability to be anywhere in the world in total comfort and privacy.” Looking ahead, Hardal believes the future of the industry can be summed up in just three words. “Sustainable, Connected, Purposeful, because the next generation will demand all three.”
And as Miami continues to rise as a global yachting capital, it’s clear that the next chapter of luxury at sea may very well begin right here.
