Miami Design District
Hosts the Seventh Annual
Fashion Strikes Cancer
Miami Design District will proudly kick off the seventh annual Fashion Strikes Cancer month-long event series in support of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF). Created by fashion visionary, stylist, and breast cancer survivor, Angeles Almuna, Fashion Strikes Cancer commemorates her personal journey with cancer and gives hope to all those who are suffering, suffered, or have lost a loved one to cancer. This year’s ticketed events will honor Actress and Improv Comedy Maven, Aniela McGuinness.
Aniela, who previously starred on "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel", is also a two-time cancer survivor. Diagnosed with breast cancer a year after her mother passed away from ovarian cancer, Aniela used comedy and honesty to help her cope with the tremendous grief. Aniela shared her cancer experience through art, and created a photo series utilizing color and humor to represent each stage of her mastectomy and reconstruction. During chemotherapy, she co-wrote and performed a one-woman show titled “I Don’t Have Cancer”, to sold-out audiences. In 2017, a year and a half after finishing treatment, Aniela walked New York Fashion Week and closed the historic runway show for AnaOna Intimates & Loungewear and #Cancerland, featuring all breast cancer bosses. Then in 2018, Aniela was diagnosed with skin cancer, in which half her nose was removed and reconstructed. Less than a year later, she was back on screen in the Emmy Award-winning show "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” Aniela's resilient and lively spirit has proven that you don't have to lose your sense of humor or sense of self to cancer too.
In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Miami Design District will host several initiatives throughout the neighborhood. All through the month of October, Miami Design District staff will show solidarity by styling pink accessories including pink polos, belts, hats, and the iconic pink ribbon. Various tenants throughout the neighborhood will also be participating in efforts to support the BCRF in their own unique ways. MIA Market will be offering a
specialty pink charity cocktail coined, “Think Pink.. For a Cure”, donating $1 from every cocktail sold to the BCRF. “Think Pink.. For a Cure” will be available at the MIA Market bar throughout the entire month of October. Similarly, fresh juice and salad bar Pomelo will also be offering a specialty “Pink Juice” through the month of October donating $1 from every juice sold to the BCRF.
Renowned aesthetic brand, Dr. Barbara Sturm and Miami-based accessories retailer, Ximena Kavalekas will be hosting in-store events this upcoming weekend on Saturday, October 1st and Sunday, October 2nd, donating 10% of all sales to the BCRF. On Saturday, October 1st, multidisciplinary artist Paula Sarmiento will be on-site at Ximena Kavalekas from 5PM to 7PM adding custom painted details to every bag purchased. Moreover, luxury global lifestyle brand AERIN will feature a month-long activation, donating a portion of all “pink product” sales to the BCRF.
