Alex Miller

architect and a lighting designer

Miami has become far more than a destination for luxury living. It has evolved into one of the world's premier stages for luxury brands to create immersive experiences that blend architecture, fashion, hospitality, and design. From the flagship boutiques that define the Miami Design District to the city's world-class hotels and cultural institutions, today's luxury is measured not only by what people see, but by how a place makes them feel.

Meet Alex Miller: Designing the World's Most Memorable Luxury

Miami has become far more than a destination for luxury living. It has evolved into one of the world's premier stages for luxury brands to create immersive experiences that blend architecture, fashion, hospitality, and design. From the flagship boutiques that define the Miami Design District to the city's world-class hotels and cultural institutions, today's luxury is measured not only by what people see, but by how a place makes them feel.

Helping shape many of those unforgettable experiences is Alex Miller, Partner at TM, the internationally acclaimed multidisciplinary design studio specializing in architecture, interiors, and lighting design. Through his work, Alex has helped transform some of Miami's most iconic luxury destinations, including Louis Vuitton Men's first freestanding U.S. flagship in the Miami Design District and the Cartier regional flagship boutique, creating environments where architecture and light become part of the brand's story.

Founded by Alex Miller and Jeff Taylor after meeting at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, TM has earned an international reputation for designing spaces that seamlessly unite architecture, interiors, and lighting into a single creative vision. Rather than treating lighting as a finishing touch, the studio integrates it into the architectural process from the very beginning, crafting environments that feel intuitive, immersive, and emotionally engaging. From luxury hospitality and retail to museums, cultural institutions, and private residences, every TM project begins with the same philosophy: great design isn't simply seen—it's experienced.

As Miami continues to establish itself as one of the world's leading luxury capitals, projects like Louis Vuitton Men's flagship and Cartier's Design District boutique demonstrate how thoughtful design has become an essential part of the city's identity. Today's most discerning clients expect more than beautiful architecture; they seek spaces that create emotion, foster connection, and leave lasting impressions long after they've walked out the door.

For Alex, that emotional connection is where every project begins.

Rather than asking what a space should look like, he starts with a different question:

How should it make people feel?

That philosophy has become the hallmark of his work and one of the reasons TM has become a trusted creative partner for many of the world's most respected luxury brands. Through architecture, lighting, and spatial storytelling, Alex isn't simply designing buildings or boutiques, he's creating experiences that transform places into destinations and moments into lasting memories.

The Designer's Perspective

What's the biggest misconception about lighting design? "That it's just about making a space brighter. People don't realize how much power lighting has—the emotions it can evoke, the way it shapes an experience, even before they're aware of it. Sometimes people leave a restaurant thinking something felt cold or uninviting, when really, it was the lighting."

How do you approach designing for iconic luxury brands? "Every brand has its own language. A Prada project is very different from Louis Vuitton, which is very different from Gucci. Our job is to understand that identity and design within their world, not ours. We become a bit of a chameleon while staying true to good design."

What role does lighting play in storytelling? "The experience begins long before someone walks through the door. You first see the building from a distance, then you notice the façade, then the details, and finally the product itself. We want people to remember the architecture and the experience—not just what they came to buy."

What's the first question you ask when starting a new project? We try to read the matrix of the project. What is the project trying to tell us? We let the architecture, the client, and the story guide us. The design often starts speaking before anyone in the room does."

How do you balance technology with timeless design? "Technology is always secondary. We never begin with the latest lighting technology and ask what we can do with it. We begin with the experience we want people to have, and then we use technology only when it helps tell that story."

What do 'Miami Vibes' mean to you? "Warmth. The smell of the ocean. A city that's welcoming, relaxed, and unlike anywhere else. Miami has a unique energy, and the architecture and design here embrace that through light, color, and an atmosphere you can't really find anywhere else."
