Meditation in Miami

“Mindful Miami” may at first seem like an unlikely pairing of words. Known for colorful events like Art Basel, Winter Music Conference and Exxxotica, it’s hard to imagine our vibrant city slowing down to catch a breath. But somehow between rush hour on the 826 and happy hour in Wynwood, there’s a movement that’s adding much needed yang to Miami’s yin.

What is mindfulness anyway? A quick Google search describes it as “the quality or state of being conscious or aware of something.” Dig a little deeper and you’ll find a lot of words alluding to awareness, present moment, calmness, attention and focus. We’ve all experienced being mindful, whether we’re conscious of it or not. Think of a time you were fully attuned to the person you were with or engaged in an activity you loved. You weren’t distracted by random thoughts in your head or social media notifications on your phone. You were simply in the moment. Now imagine being able to access that state of mind on command. Mindfulness, through meditation, helps you to do just that. Think of it like the gym, but instead of working on your glutes with squat repetitions, you’re strengthening key regions in the brain through meditation practice. Jon Kabat-Zinn, creator of the Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) program says “The best way to capture moments is to pay attention. This is how we cultivate mindfulness. Mindfulness means being awake. It means knowing what you are doing.”

Lucky for you, you’re living in a city that is fully embracing the importance of this practice with meditation studios, clubs, festivals and even a mindfulness research institute at the University of Miami. The best part is that much like Miami’s down-to-earth vibe, the local leaders of the movement are making it approachable and accessible to all of us.

Check out a few ways to find some Zen in the magic city that seems to never sleep. These are just a few favorites —Miami is adding more mindful options for its residentsevery day.

Innergy Meditation Studio-

Innergy Meditation Studio- nestled away on 16th street off Alton, is a little studio with big heart. The mantra here is “Come As You Are” and they certainly deliver. Founded in 2017 and led by a team of superstars, the studio is on a mission to make mindfulness attainable. Grab a cushion, blanket, chair and even a Muse headband to track biofeedback during certain classes. The 30, 45 or 60 minute classes and workshops include guided meditation, sound healing, a Saturday morning class with stretching and even a meditation for your favorite four-legged friend on National Dog Day. Starting in mid-September they’re taking mindfulness outside the studio with SoBe Mindful, led and developed by key advisor Scott Rogers — who is also the founder and director of the Institute for Mindfulness Studies and of the University of Miami School of Law's Mindfulness in Law Program.  https://innergymeditation.com
