Miami is such a fun and diverse city where fashion plays a big role. There are so many options for every budget & every style, and although the weather has a big influence on how ‘Miamians’ dress, there is always something for everyone.
But being fashion savvy doesn't mean it should cost a fortune, shopping all those beautiful trends and still being able to pay bills, is as fun as going down the slide in Aventura Mall. Which by the way if you haven't already done it yet, you’re totally missing out!
When it comes to styling my wardrobe, I always do my homework first. This means I am always in-the-know about current trends, colors for the season, prints, and accessories. Let’s keep in mind that there are fads and trends, so knowing the difference between the two is the first step to styling on a budget.
Fads are intense but very short-lived. It could be a handbag or a pair of shoes that everyone jumped to get and after the item sells out, the style is gone
Meanwhile, trends last longer like an off-the-shoulder sweater that you can continue wearing two or three winters in a row. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve jumped into fads many times just to realize a few weeks later that I no longer wanted to wear the item I bought (lesson learned!).
Shopping on a budget doesn’t mean we have to sacrifice style or miss out on trends, it just means we plan for the season and incorporate some new pieces into our core wardrobe. Let’s not forget about finding all the sales!!! I mean, who doesn’t love a sale, right?
One of my personal favorites are local boutiques. They typically carry all the new trends and you get a more personable experience; plus, since they have to be continuously moving and updating inventory, they have great sales even before the middle of the season! Now, not that we can tell yet but, Fall and Winter are coming so my picks for the upcoming seasons would be a lightweight white off-the-shoulder sweater (forget about the “no white after Labor Day” rule), a mauve or moss green long sleeve sweater dress, a pair of black or tan booties, a pair of dark wash jeans, a leopard print t-shirt, a wool hat, a black bodysuit, a satin black or grey dress, and if you want to be a little ‘extra’ get a light-weight tan or black coat.
Now that I have my new items for the season, I am not running to put my shorts and tank tops away yet, I mean let’s face it, the heat in Miami never really goes away. In turn, I will incorporate my summer pieces and transition them into Fall. I would wear the lightweight off-the-shoulder sweater with a tank underneath, a pair of shorts, booties and Voila!
My biggest advice is to shop for items you can mix & match and that you will be able to wear more than once. Get basics like t-shirts and tanks that can always be dressed up or down with just changing from flats to heels and a cute skirt. So whatever your style is, don’t break the piggy bank, just shop smart.
